Management and disposal of bio-medical waste has been a concern that the India healthcare sector has been trying to address for some time now. Generated inside a healthcare facility, its effects potentially go beyond its boundaries to impact health and lives of many. Despite efforts to live by existing regulations, progress has been far from satisfactory. Awareness, willingness, infrastructural constraints and knowledge leading to successful implementation have been concerns that policymakers and the industry have continually groped with.

Of equal concern has been the rise in nosocomial infection in these facilities. Statistics show a disturbing trend indicating more and more patients contracting unrelated infections that are major causes of death and morbidity among hospitalized patients. Clearly therefore, a great concern in terms of public health, the economic and human impact of hospital acquired infection remains a challenge today as it confronts newer micro-organisms, increased bacterial resistance to antibiotics , and impaired immunity of an overall increased number of patients.

Related to each other as they are to a large extent, it is evident that a consolidated approach needs to gather momentum, to address the aforesaid issues in a synergistic manner. As India unfolds as the new healthcare destination for those in the west, besides catering to its own expanding populace, the time is now to craft a mid-term vision, followed by creating a sustainable strategy and an effective implementation plan for managing bio-medical waste and nosocomial infection. This will be the primary objective that this event will aim to serve.

“Redefining Bio-Medical Waste Management and Technology: Vision 2020” will set the stage for the future of the Healthcare Industry in India.

The event will be conducted over two full days in May 2011 in New Delhi, India, and is designed to address the current context, rationale and challenges of management of bio-medical waste, as well as emerge with sustainable plans for implementation so as to establish the direction for the future.
